Welcome to The Gourmet Gourmand (AKA The Blog of The Fancy Food Loving Fatso)
Hello! My name is Sarah and I am the cook, photographer, and designer for The Gourmet Gourmand. I am blogging out of my tiny apartment kitchen in San Diego, California. I rarely let anyone in my kitchen, but if I do it’s my husband, Dave, and our 3 cats (yes I am publicly admitting the size of our cat family on the internet). Our obnoxious yet adorable Maine Coon, Erwin, believes that he is The Official Gourmet Gourmand taste-tester.
His personal meal preferences include: any human food in sight.
While I have no formal culinary training, I have eaten many a meal in my 28 years, and I often pretend like I know what I’m doing after obsessively watching you-tube videos on repeat about the process of cooking.
My personal philosophy on cooking is that it is truly a creative experience and should never become a chore. I cook because I want to create something inspired, not because I need to put another dinner on the table. If I have a current food obsession, you’re going to find out about it. If I have an intense aversion to a flavor, you’re going to get a rant about (there will be NO seaweed!) And the day I decide to tackle croissant-making, I promise you, you will be the first to know.
In my recipes, I believe in using high quality, flavorful, fresh ingredients. Seasonal, if possible. I believe in using real butter and real cream (in slight moderation). I am also involved in a lifelong love affair with Indian food and have an entire shelf in my kitchen dedicated to Indian spices. I’ll have to share it with you someday.
Besides living, breathing, and dreaming about food, I also work as a full-time nurse practitioner in psychiatry. I love to paint, I’ve been playing piano since I was 7, and I am a fantasy novel enthusiast. (Yes I was reading Game of Thrones before it was cool). Dave and I love to travel, and a huge part of traveling for us is trying out new cuisine and exploring new flavors.
Thus, as Julia Child puts it “The main thing is to have a gutsy approach and use your head” and “If you’re alone in the kitchen and you drop the lamb, you can always just pick it up. Who’s going to know?” (hehe, don’t you just love her?)
But seriously, thank you so much for stopping by and caring about my little space on the internet. Corny but honest, your support means the world to me. I love my readers and if you have any questions or concerns about my recipes please, please don’t hesitate to contact me here.
But enough about me- it’s time to go make some kitchen messes! Ready, set go!
